I didn't even get the connection at first! The story makes more sense, now that I've read over a review of "Bears Discover Fire."
If you're referring to the title, "smut" is an old word for pornography... I think the idea here is that the bears are discovering civilization (or experiencing the Fall of Bears?) with all of its sleazy side; whereas the bears in the Bisson story sound more enlightened or Edenic? Just guessing.
