There are two kinds of book lovers:
1. The ones who love libraries.
2. The ones who don't.
Some of us love libraries because, well, you can get a cornucopia of free books... for free! You can read tons of books that you'd never be able to afford on your own. You can just go online and order whatever book you want to be delivered to your local branch, free of charge. If you like a book, then you can go out and buy your own. If not, hey, just take it back. You've lost nothing but some time.
Examples of library lovers: Me, Jan.
Other book lovers seem to have a phobia of libraries. They want to own their own books. Besides, librarians are sadists who are just looking for an excuse to slap you with hundreds of dollars in fines! Who can keep track of when books have to returned? Who can figure out all this online renewal and hold stuff? It's frightening. Not to mention all that Dewey craziness. And the library doesn't have Starbucks.
Examples of library haters: Anactoria, Ian.
What is the underlying reason for these divergent types? Maybe it has to do with how much their parents took them to the library? I know I fell in love (and fell hard) with the Centennial Library at a very young age, when my parents would bring me in from the country. Perhaps library haters got taken to the bookstore instead. Maybe they have a natural dislike of deadlines and due dates. Or maybe a librarian frightened their mother when she was pregnant. Who can say? Perhaps Nancy Pearl knows, but I don't.

Ha! Its true.
I'm not really a library hater, per se. I like *being* in libraries. I can appreciate their ambiance and their collections. But as for borrowing books, as a general policy I'd rather have my own copy. I like to think I'm building a very unique collection of "me" books. :)
My parents took us to libraries when we were younger probably as often as we went used book store shopping (mostly garage sales, thrift stores) so it probably balanced out.
I LOVE libraries for all the reasons you mention.
My love of libraries comes partly from loving them when I was a kid, but also from my desire not to get overloaded with possessions. Especially considering the price of floorspace around here...
I love libraries.
I love them so much that I emulate them in my interior decoration.
:)
LOL!
The first time I went to a library I was about 7 or 8. I simply could not understand what all the books were for. Someone told me I could take them home for free if I returned them.
I didn't believe them. Too good to be true.
Hah. I'm definitely the type to love libraries. I find that books are one of the least practical things to try to own: they're heavy, expensive, and I tend to not read them more than once (unless I REALLY like them) anyway. And these days, using libraries is easier than ever...you can renew your books without even needing to have the book in hand, or without even going to the library! Oh, and the fines are generally pretty reasonable too...
